Training Session
The aims and objectives of the initial part of the training is to provide a basic awareness of substance misuse; the effects, groupings and the law, to promote discussion around the potential conequences of substance misuse and an outlook of local trends and prevalence of drug use in Stockton. This involves looking at what a drug is, why people (with a focus on young people) use drugs and alcohol, drug slang (current nicknames for drugs and alcohol in Stockton at present), drug groupings (stimulants/depressants/hallucinogens), legal highs, drugs and the law and discussing the effects of drugs and harm minimisation support to give to young people around drugs and alcohol.
The aims and objectives of the second part of the training is to provide an introduction to STASH - the current team and the services we can offer young people (and professionals), exploring the potential signs and symptoms that may indicate drug use, assessing young people for substance misuse (introduction of the new referral forms) and delivering brief interventions (tier 2) to young people.
The Brief Intervention Pack
The brief intervention pack contains a booklet with a various range of exercises that you can use with young people around substance misuse including topics such as drugs in context, drugs knowledge, understanding risk and risky behaviour, making choices and decisions and understanding your drug/alcohol use. Another booklet is also included in the pack which contains tutors guidance notes for each exercise- covering the aims of the exercise, intended learning outcomes, who it can be used with, service teeting, time required, resources required, method, review/reflect/assess and tutors notes.
The pack contains HIT cards- which is an information card relating to 17 different drugs/alcohol. The cards have information on what the drug is, how its used, the effects of the drug, problems associated with the drug and the law. Also included are drug and alcohol cards which are plain cards with the name of the drug/alcohol (these dont contain images), a photo pack containg various images relating to substance misuse which are open to discussion and finally, a CD which contains everything mentioned above electronically.
